The biological effects of radionuclides is driven both by the emission of ionizing radiation and chemical toxicity. The consequences of both phenomena is related to the capacity of the compounds to interact with biomolecules such as target proteins and small counter-ions (carbonate, phosphate, etc.) that can facilitate the diffusion in the organism.
