While melanin's role is to protect us when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun, the molecules used to make it could produce alterations in the DNA. CEA researchers and their international collaborators have observed this antagonistic effect in melanin production chain for several hours after exposure. Alterations generated can cause skin cancer (melanoma). This antagonistic effect is described in the journal
Science February 20, 2015.
CEA is a French government-funded technological research organisation in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies.
