Proton exchange membrane hydrogen fuel cell technology is based on the use of noble, rare and expensive metals. After developing platinum-free hydrogen fuel cells where bioinspired catalysts are immobilized on carbon nanotubes, we demonstrate here (SYMMES and LCBM) that the functionalization of carbon nanotubes directs the structuring of the ionomer (Nafion™), another central component of the cell.
