Some of the secrets of fuel cell electrodes have been uncovered thanks to large facilities: microstructure and transport properties have recently been studied by neutron scattering in the in the context of a joint Nissan and CEA work project. Surprisingly, Nafion® as a thin electrolyte layer collecting protons in the electrode has similar properties to those of Nafion® in its thick membrane form.
