Air pollution has become a major health problem. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of pollutants associated with vehicle exhaust, city heating and industries using coal and petroleum-derived products. More than 100 PAHs have been identified and they are still produced in complex mixtures. The ability of PAHs to damage DNA makes them mutagenic and carcinogenic.
